Chapter Twenty

Margaret wheeled Rev into his room. His chin was on his chest, and he was snoring lightly. Margaret lifted his head up and looked at her father. He never opened his eyes. She gently let his head rest on his chest again. She was visibly upset.

The army of the devil is everywhere, she thought.

The doctor at the hospital was trying to trick her into thinking her father could communicate by blinking his eyes. She stood in front of Rev, who remained still.

“Spies, spies—the devil has them everywhere,” she said aloud to her father. “They are trying to confuse me so I can’t do what God wants me to do—crush that house of the devil and bring home the children of the Lord. Papa, what am I going to do?” She looked at him. “I wish you could talk to me. You would tell me what to do.”

No, he wouldn’t, the voice said. You’re stupid. He wouldn’t let you preach, would he?

Margaret sat on Rev’s bed and covered her ears with her hands. “That’s not true. Papa loves me.”

If he loves you so much, why aren’t you the minister of the church? You’re nothing, the voice insisted.

Margaret rose, walked over to the cherrywood dresser to get a tissue to wipe her tears. She didn’t understand why the voice was sometimes nice to her and sometimes hateful.

The words of the old woman came back to her. Hold on, child, just hold on. Everything is going to be all right.

“Yes, she’s right. I just got to hold on. I’ll show them. Everybody will be talking about Margaret Johnson Lee Pierce.”

Walking to the door, Margaret looked back at Rev, who was still asleep. What in the world did they do to him in that room?

He’s not drooling, the voice said.

“Shut up!” Margaret yelled. She didn’t want to hear any more from that voice.

Rev heard the door shut, but waited a few more minutes before opening his eyes. For the first time in years, he felt like himself. He slowly lifted his right arm, then his left. He wanted to try his legs, but was too scared. What if they didn’t move? He sat there staring into space, thinking about his wife.

There was so much he had wanted to say to her, but he couldn’t utter a word. She was still a beautiful woman. She hadn’t died! Amanda was alive. She had healed him for the second time in his life. When he was a young boy and dying, she prayed over him and used herbs to remove the fever from his body. She was his angel. He and his father, as well as the people of the old family church in Virginia, never understood Amanda’s gift of healing. They were ignorant of the wisdom God had given her. They thought Amanda was possessed by the devil. They were scared of the power she possessed, power they feared she would use against them. His fear of his father and his stubbornness had caused him to miss out on a life with her.
